The longer we've lived in Central Eastern Europe, the more our family has come to appreciate sunshine and vacation time with cousins in Utah. This has been such a wonderful summer full of friends, cousins, grandparents, boating, motorcycling, swimming, movies, late nights, junk food and fireworks. I wish it would never end...

Farm Goodness

I love coming to Utah in the summer and being able to spend time with our families and extended families. What a joy! Last week I had the chance to spend some quality time with my niece, Karin, and her little family. How crazy it was to be photographing her new baby girl, Stella. It doesn't seem that long ago that her mom was born. I was 12 years old and my mom let me fly on a plane by myself from California to Utah to greet my niece Karin into the world. Am I really that old? Already??? Anyhow, the sweetest old lady lives directly behind my parents in Lehi and was very kind to let us take some photos on her old farm property. It was a magical place for me! Enjoy a sneak peek at what we came up with...

This was my grandmother's carriage. I have black and white photos of my mother and her twin sister sitting in this carriage when they were babies. What a special heirloom for our family!

So, if you're a friend of mine on facebook, you may have already seen these pics. I took them last month in Prague. But I love them ohhh so much, so I figured it was time to get them on the blog! This is one of my favorite families on the planet. Our kids adore each other. They wish we could be next door neighbors. I wish we could too! Enjoy.

Super Kents!

Ever since I saw their dad dressed as Superman for Halloween, I can't help but think of this family as being anything but "Super." And they have so many Super kids, too! Totally being serious here. They are great kids! It was their dream to have a family picture taken in front of some old castle ruins, which really aren't difficult to come across in Prague. These awesome kids braved the swarms of mosquitoes, and mom and dad patiently triumphed over the giddiness that nearly always preceded children's bedtime. In all, it was a Super fun photo session :)

Hi, there! I know, I know...it's been SUCH a long time since I've posted anything new. As many of you know, I've taken something of a "sabbatical" from professional photography for the past year and a half (since we moved to Prague). Although I've really enjoyed this time with my 4 wonderful, active children (who just don't ever seem to stop growing!) I do miss the creative outlet that photography has been to me for so many years. So, as I slowly find my way back to the photographic world, allow me to share with you just a few of my favorite shots from the last year and half. Just because I'm on sabbatical, doesn't mean my camera is collecting dust. Just one for tonight. More tomorrow. Enjoy :)

The technical side of photography: Getting to know your camera. Understanding aperture, shutter speed, ISO and how they work together. Identifying and maximizing your light source.

Thursday, May 5th 1:30-3:30pm (EISP Theater)
The artistic side of photography: Composition, light, focus, depth of field, Rule of Thirds, and more!

Thursday, May 12th 1:00-3:30pm (location to be determined)
Photoshop Basics and Hands-on picture taking fun!

The price for all 3 classes is 1500 czk and all proceeds will be donated to One Heart Bulgaria, a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Bulgarian orphans.

Photography should be fun! The main goal is for you to walk away with a new excitement and creative new ideas for taking your treasured family photos. Don’t forget to bring along your camera! Any camera type is acceptable. However, much of the technical discussion will be focused on SLR camera types.

I know, I know. It's been a few weeks since I've posted anything new. Well, what can I say? It's summertime!!! We left Warsaw 3 weeks ago, and have been playing and playing here in Utah ever since. Many of you know that my brother, Paul, is terminally ill. In 2007, he and my dad started a project together to build a replica 1965 427 Cobra. Soon after that, my bro was diagnosed with more cancer. His car was nearly complete, but the effects of chemo, radiation, and numerous surgeries tapped his strength, and the car sat unfinished for some time. A few weeks ago, a team of friends and car building enthusiasts surprised Paul by finishing his Cobra for him. It was an amazing event and experience for our family and for Paul. I had the honor of photographing the finished car, and my brother. Here are just a couple for now. I'll post a few more this weekend. It's a beauty, isn't it?

Hope everyone had a great day today celebrating with loved ones. I love this time of year. All the new life, and colors of Spring...they inspire me. My good friend (and former Elle model), Marta, and I got together last week to break in our new studio gear. It was so much fun, yet kinda scary to be in FRONT of the camera for a change. In loving memory...

It was 7 years ago today that my brother, Art, left us. Life, for the rest of us, has somehow continued on...but we will always keep him in our hearts.

Art was in a serious car accident when he was 21 that left him a quadriplegic. But that didn't stop him from living his dreams. He traveled all over the world, he wrote books, he raced in marathons, broke world records, and had just been elected as President of the National Speaker's Association. You may be wondering about the Super Bowl ring he's wearing in the picture here. It was a gift to him from the Baltimore Ravens. They credit Art with leading them to their Super Bowl victory.

He died before his time from a toxic reaction to a prescription medication. He was an amazing person, mentor, motivator, example, brother, and friend. We miss you, Art. Invictus!

Some exciting news...for those of you who speak Polish, go to your nearest supermarket and pick up the latest issue of Twoje 9 Miesiecy. This is something like Pregnancy Magazine in the US. I had the honor of being interviewed by a good friend, Izabela Gornika-Zdziech, who asked me to please share some tips on taking better maternity and baby pictures, and why I feel that they are important times to document with photographs. Part 1 (maternity) ran in January, and Part 2 (babies) is hot off the press! Despite my inability to read Polish, it's so exciting to see something I've worked hard to create being featured in a magazine. Thank you, Izabela!

These were some of the first pictures I took with my new Olympus 1030SW that I got for Christmas. This little point-and-shoot is waterproof, freezeproof, shockproof, and dustproof...I can actually let the kids shoot with this one and just sit back and relax, cause it's not going to break! :) These were taken in an indoor pool...my kids and a few of the cousins just goofing around. It felt so weird just jumping into the pool with a camera in my hands! A first for me...I am loving this new toy!

These two girls reminded me so much of my sister and I when we were young. They were so giggly and had such a sweet connection. (These were also taken during the Utah photog get-together that I mentioned in an earlier post...remember the one with pictures of my nephew?) I really enjoyed photographing these girls. I didn't get to meet their mom, but I have to give her some major credit here...these girls were so well-mannered and so easy to work with. We had them tramping through the snow for more than an hour, and they never once complained. Thanks, girls, for being such great models!

This little guy was born on New Year's Eve (his choice, not mom's), and here he is at 10-days old. Isn't he just sweet? I spent a few hours with his family taking pictures last week. His 2-year old brother just cracked me up! We were instant friends! I took pictures of the whole family, but I'll post mainly pictures of the baby for now since he is really the star of the show. I just love photographing newborns...

Snow Day!

Meet my nephew, Matt. I've been his aunt since I was about 10 years old, and boy could I tell you some stories...but I won't (you can thank me later, Matt). While I was in Utah over the holidays, I got together with some photographer friends that I met at Skye Hardwick's workshop last summer. Matt was in need of some new headshots, so I convinced him to come along and do some modeling for us. It must have been rather intimidating, having 5 women all pointing a camera at him at the same time...but Matt was cool as a cucumber, and we ended up with some fabulous images! Thanks for the good times, Matt!

We just got back from a fabulous trip to the States for Christmas. While we were there, we were lucky enough to greet our brand new baby neice, Luci, into the world. She was born just after Chrstimas (the best gift ever), and weighed in at only 6 pounds. This tiny little peanut had us all wrapped around her little finger in no time. I was fortunate enough to have a few minutes alone with her and mama at 3-days old. Here are a few of my favorites from our photo debut:

Wasn't John Denver the BEST??? Wade and I spent one our very first dates at a John Denver outdoor concert back in 1992. That was one of my favorite nights ever! Today is our 15th wedding anniversary... can you believe it? Have we really been married for that long? Are we really getting that old?

Anyhow, we're off to the the US tomorrow for a 2 1/2 week holiday with our loved ones. The taxi arrives at 5am to deliver us to the airport (heaven help me...). I'm so excited to be in Utah for Christmas this year! We'll be able to see ALL of our families, and it's been snowing there this week, so the skiing should be primo! The kids are completely wired and have been bouncing off the walls all night. We may have to duct tape them to their beds soon.

I created photo calendars as gifts for our families this year. I'd love to post all of the pages here, but I'm afraid I'd spoil the surprise for a few people. Here's one page, just a teaser...

Tis the Season to Give...

A photography friend, Kristin Kalp, came up with this idea about giving back and challenged me to join her and other photographers from around the globe. I think that I’m up to the challenge.

You know someone. You know someone who’s experienced a tragedy, is struggling to stay afloat, is busy raising kids while holding down more than one job, or is volunteering selflessly despite extenuating personal circumstances. You know someone who can’t afford custom photography, but who would cherish it this holiday season. You know someone who deserves a year-round reminder of their family’s spirit, love, and beauty.

You know someone. I guarantee it.

I want to know who they are, and I want to give them the chance to experience complimentary custom photography. The winner will receive a custom portrait session ($250 value) PLUS a $200 print credit. (The photo session can be indoor or outdoor and will take place in April/May of '09.) It’s in your power to give them the artwork they deserve this holiday season.

Oh, and the best part? The person who nominates the winner receives a $200 print credit. What better reason to show some love could there possibly be, people?

The rules:

You cannot nominate yourself, and the person nominated must sincerely be incapable of purchasing my services. (Being unable to make mortgage payments for a two-million-dollar-home vacation home in Paris does not qualify as sincere financial need.)

The nominee must reside in Warsaw, Poland and should speak English (my Polish is rubbish). For my own peace of mind, they must also be a member of the ASW community, or at least have a relationship with someone in the ASW community.

Not a closet Twilight fan...

I just got back from seeing "Twilight" at the Zloty Teraszy cinema tonight. Aaaaaaaahhhh! It was infuriating and intoxicating at the same time. But, I am so relieved to finally see this movie. I can't tell you how long I've been waiting. My husband was about ready to have me institutionalized, I'm sure! And yet, he took off work early today to buy tickets to see Twilight just because he knew it would make me happy. I love that man.

If you haven't read the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, go out and buy yourself these books NOW! You will thank me later, I promise. Or, better yet, just tell me "Bev, I haven't read these books," and I will make sure they are wrapped and under your Christmas tree in no time. Great stories, great author. Go read!

Jazz Man...

I know I've been away from the blog for a while...sorry about that! This has been SUCH a busy month for me. I seriously cannot believe that November is already ending. How did that happen?

This Wednesday, I will be presenting Part 2 of "Photography & Your Kids: the basics." The class will begin at 7:00. If you missed Part 1, or would like to go over it again, come at 6:00 for a review session. I am not charging any fee for the class; however, I am asking for a minimum 50PLN donation per class to go towards my favorite charity: One Heart, Bulgaria. Send me an email if you are interested in attending.

I don't like to post without a picture, so here's another favorite of my oldest son (11) from our family session recently. He is a stellar musician, specializing in piano, baritone and voice. He auditioned a couple of weeks ago for the Middle School competitive band that travels to Russia in February. He didn't feel very confident that he would make the team as a 6th grader. Nevertheless, he surprised us this morning with the news that he made the cut! Woo-hoo! He is so excited!

Deadline for printed Holiday cards is November 28th! These are beautiful 5x7inch folded cards with a custom holiday greeting in whichever language you choose! $3/card (25 card minimum) includes the envelopes. Printed cards are a local service and are available for Warsaw residents only. If you would like to purchase the digital design only (in high-resolution JPG format), these are available to anyone and can be yours for $30/design...your photo or mine! These you can print yourself, post on your blog, or send to your family in an email! Deadline for digital designs is December 5th.

It's a miracle...our family will have a picture to put in the Christmas card this year!!! Do you have any idea how long it's been? I guess that is the fate of photographer moms like myself. I spend so much time photographing other families that I don't have time to take pictures of my own! We made a very last-minute decision on Tuesday to throw ourselves together for a picture. I met up with this cute Irish family for a fun family session yesterday. They told me this is the first time they've EVER had professional pictures taken of their family! I refuse to believe it. Their kids were just oozing with charm and major cute-ness. Especially the oldest one, Liam. I see a real future in modeling for that little guy. Watch out mom and dad! Enjoy your sneak preview.

I know I've posted a few pictures of my girls here on the photography blog a few times, but did any of you realize that I actually have 2 boys, too? Yes, it's true. Here is one of them (the younger of the two). This is Ethan. He just turned 9. If he had dark, curly hair, he would be a "mini-me" of my husband! My oldest son I cannot post now because his hair is so long that It's sure to kindle the wrath of the mother-in-law. He's scheduled for a haircut this week, so I'm sure you will be seeing him on here soon!

What to wear???

October and November are busy months for family pictures! The leaves are changing colors, the days are getting shorter, and the air is getting cooler. A few of you have asked me recently: what is the best thing to wear in an outdoor family picture? While we all have different ideas about style and color, I will tell you what I think looks nice and give you some ideas for putting together your own family this fall.

Start with jeans. Denim looks great on camera, and it seems to be something that everyone in the family has in their wardrobe. Casual is the look for family pictures these days, and nothing says casual better than denim.

Add a casual button-down or sweater. In more traditional-looking pictures, the family can all be in the same color (say, blue jeans and black sweaters).

Want something a little more casual and natural? Try putting the family in complementing colors (like blue jeans with blacks, browns and beiges).

Want to beat the cold and still look fashionable? Try adding layers! I love the look of corduroy blazers, denim jackets and wool sweaters.

For a little more color (and fun), add some of your favorite fall accessories, like colorful scarves, funky hats or fur-lined vests.

And don't forget about the shoes! Scuffed-up gym shoes are probably ok for gym, but for family pictures, we want eyes to be drawn to your beautiful faces, not to Junior's un-kept velcro sneakers. Make sure the shoes are looking nice and are well-suited to the outfits you've chosen for the family.

I have been such a blog slacker lately! Sorry! The kid's school is keeping me so busy these days. Anyhow, the sun FINALLY decided to make an appearance here in Warsaw after 3 long weeks of dark, gray and rainy skies. So, of course the first thing I did was grab the camera and run to my nearest favorite shooting location. I drug my girls along for what I told them would be a "fashion show." Imagine their disappointment to realize they were the only ones in it! Despite their fighting with each other almost the ENTIRE time, I ended up with quite a few favorites! Warning: this is going to be a BIG post!

I know I posted an image from this session back in August, but I've had a very busy fall season and FINALLY finished editing this session. Can I just take advantage of this opportunity to show off my mom? My mom and her twin sister (Betty and Letty) are proud to be Tennessee farm girls, can you tell!? We had a short 30 minutes to shoot these one evening while I was in Utah, but I'm so pleased with how they turned out. Aren't they just the cutest grandmas ever??? Love you, Mom!

It's sick...truly sick. I picked up my first copy of Twilight on a whim as I was leaving the Chicago airport headed for Warsaw. Traveling overseas with 4 kids, I NEVER have time to read on the plane. But, while I was in Utah, I was completely shocked at how many of my friends, family, neighbors, random acquaintances insisted I needed to read this book. So, I bought it and (being the truly addicting book that it is) ignored my kids for half the flight to read it! Wow! Bad mom...bad mom.

So, 2 days ago I'm strolling through a mall in Warsaw shopping for my youngest daughter's birthday, when I pass the English bookstore. Right there in the window, they have every copy of Stephenie Meyer's book...in English! Of course, I picked up her 2nd book, New Moon. Lucky for me, I've been sick in bed for the last two days with a heinous sore throat and fever, with nothing to do but read this book (I know...it's disturbing. I did say I was lucky to be sick, didn't I?) And now, I've got nothing but vampires and werewolves on the brain. I looked out my window at the overcast skies this morning and thought "Ooh, perfect vampire weather." And when I hugged my husband this morning, I half expected him to feel cold. Weird, huh? I'm tempted to drag my sick body back to the mall today to buy book #3! Someone stop me!

Child Session $200
This is for one child only. (Add $15 for each additional child.) The session will last approximately 1 hour. This price also includes a fully edited, high-resolution CD with the best 20-30 images from the session.

Family Session $250
For up to 5 people (Add $10 for each additional person.) These sessions are generally 1 - 1.5 hours. This price includes a fully edited, high-resolution CD with the best 30-40 images from the session.

High School SENIORS $225
These sessions are all about having fun and showing off your personality! Plan on about 1 - 1.5 hours of shooting. This price includes a fully edited, high resolution CD with the best 20-30 images from the session. It also includes 2-8x10's OR 4 5x7's.

Sessions can be on-location, or in studio. Want to do both? Add $100. (Expect more time shooting and more finished images).

SO, I just put together a new header for this blog because I felt like the bigger pictures made the old header look pretty wimpy. MAN, that was hard! I am not so good at design, and choosing pictures to include was so hard!!! I'm still not sure this is exactly what I wanted it to look like, so it could change again in the near future. Meet Baby Addison! This little girl belongs to my best friend, who came to visit me in Utah this summer. Isn't she adorable? I could just eat her up! I'm a little jealous of her name. Ever since I can remember, I wanted a girl named Madison. But, as fate would have it, Madison sounds pretty terrible in front of Robison. Wouldn't you agree? And so, I will just have to ooh and aah and take out all my baby hunger on this little sweetie for now.

Well, I'm back in Poland now and working hard to get the kids through the jet-lag, which is always such a pleasant experience. I'm trying to get caught up now on a few summer sessions, but first I want to show you a few from my own family (who are most likely checking the blog daily for a sneak peak!) So, here are just a couple of teasers for you! The first is my brother and his cute family (plus my dad's vintage truck). My brother has cancer and just finished six weeks of radiation and chemo. Doesn't he look amazing considering what he's gone through?! The second is my mom, Betty, and her identical twin, Letty. They grew up on a farm in Tennessee. Can you tell? Too cute! I must post a few more of these when I have time.

Let me preface this post by saying that I did not take the following pictures (boo-hoo)...they were taken by another Salt Lake photographer, Angie Monson, to advertise a new kid's clothing boutique in Sugarhouse. Aren't these amazing photos? Well, the shop is equally STUNNING! I left there with 2 new dresses for my youngest daughter and some baby legs for a friend. Everything in there was TDF cute! These two little ones are just as cute as can be! Those eyes...mmmm...love em. They really had NO interest in having their picture taken yesterday morning and certainly gave me a run for the money, but I think the results are well worth the workout, don't you? Meet my great-nephew, Arthur. Isn't he beautiful? My niece and her husband named him after my brother, Arthur, who died 6 years ago. In the first two images, he is sitting in the same carriage that my mother (his great-grandmother) sat in with her twin sister when they were babies! Isn't that amazing??? I didn't tell my mom that we were doing this...she is going to be so THRILLED! I can't wait to show her.

Notice in the picture of these 3 on the train tracks...the train is actually approaching behind them! Yikes! I'm not so sure I'll be using that location again soon. Enjoy the sneak preview!

Thanks to my sister-in-law, I had some wonderful one-on-one time with my youngest daughter, Lorin, today. My baby girl is nearly four years old and it just kills me that she is getting so big! So, of course, being the photog mom that I am, I decided it was time to take her picture! If you look carefully at the last picture, you will see a grasshopper flying right next to Lorin! Pretty cool, eh?

Our very good friends, Asia and Richard, were married in Warsaw on June 12th...the day before our scheduled departure for the US. I am so glad that we could be there for their wedding day! It was so much fun...they are such a fun and care-free couple. ! just love their attitude. You guys inspire me! I don't normally shoot weddings, but when Asia asked me, I just couldn't refuse her. In fact, I was delighted for the opportunity! I have so many favorites from the day that I had a hard time choosing which ones to post here for the sneak preview. Just before we left Warsaw for our summer holiday, I volunteered part of an afternoon to teaching a Girl Scout troop how to take better pictures. I didn't have a babysitter that afternoon, so I brought my six year-old along to do some modeling. This picture is a result of that very short class. Isn't she beautiful? I feel like such a bad mom, though. This is one of the only decent pictures I have of Marin from this past year, and it was completely unplanned. I guess that is the fate of any photographer. The more pictures you take for others, the fewer you take of your own kids! Either that, or my kids have just learned how to "scatter" whenever the camera comes out. What do you think? Do your kids tend to "scatter," or do they ham it up for the camera? Post a comment!

My two sisters and I live in 3 different countries (Marty's in the US, I'm in Poland and Carla's in Texas...;) ) so, it is a very rare occasion when we can be together. 2 weeks ago was one of those occasions! We were able to steal a few hours of time away from the rest of the families for some real "sister time." We had so much fun! We took a few pictures in front of my new townhouse of each other and here is a small sample of the results of that photo shoot. Can you tell which one is me?

I'm finally back on line after nearly 2 weeks of vacation time with my family! It's been a crazy but wonderful 2 weeks, and now I'm ready for a vacation from my vacation. I'm down at Lake Powell, near Paige, Arizona for some serious water skiing and cliff jumping fun! We're staying in a little hotel in the middle of the desert and, what do you know, they have wireless internet! Woo-hoo! So, for my good friends (and biggest fans) who have been waiting a few weeks for their sneak preview (sorry, guys), I am posting just a FEW of about a million adorable family pictures! Just look at the rolls on this baby! Isn't he beautiful??? A very good friend of mine came over the other day for some fun (but very quick) pictures of her nearly 8 month old baby boy. He was so good, and so happy to be naked! He only peed on the floor twice (oops). I just couldn't get enough of those squishy, huggable baby rolls! He IS the Michelin baby. Love em!
